At Robert Young Architects, we believe that every space carries a story, and that thoughtful renovation is an opportunity to honor and evolve that narrative. Whether we’re working on a historic Long Island cottage, a New York City apartment, or a modernist coastal retreat, our approach begins with a deep respect for what already exists.
Renovation is not just a design challenge, it’s a philosophy. We look for ways to reuse and adapt materials, reimagine existing structures, and unlock the latent potential of a site. By working with what’s already there, we not only reduce construction waste, but also preserve the character and integrity that make a place meaningful.
Our goal is not to erase the past, but to build upon it with clarity and purpose. Every intervention is measured: a kitchen reconfigured for openness, a staircase introduced to enhance flow, a window repositioned to frame a view. These gestures, though subtle, often yield the most transformative results.
In an age of resource-conscious design, renovation is one of the most sustainable things we can do. And when done well, it leads to spaces that feel not just new, but inherently suited to their place.
Take our transformation of a 1980s “tear down” in Bridgehampton. While many might have opted to start from scratch, we saw value in the original structure’s bones.
The starting point, as with many of our projects, was to blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor experiences. The existing home featured a raised deck surrounded by railings—visually disconnected from the landscape. By relocating the pool further from the house, we created room for a screened porch and a more welcoming sun deck, complete with broad steps down to a usable lawn.
The new pool and poolhouse, enclosed by a simple hedge, establish a separate zone for relaxation, with the added benefits of safety and seasonal flexibility.
In Montauk, we completed a gut renovation of an oceanfront home perched high on a bluff. The existing house—while architecturally unremarkable—occupied a “pre-existing/non-conforming” position on the site that would be nearly impossible to replicate today. Collaborating with LaGuardia Design Group, we reimagined the home to fully capture its panoramic Atlantic views, turning what might have been dismissed as undesirable (a pool in the front yard, for example) into a defining feature of the project. The result is a home uniquely attuned to its place, its era, and its owners.
These projects reflect our core belief: that good design doesn’t begin with a blank slate, but with a thoughtful response to what already exists. Renovation allows us to reduce construction waste, preserve architectural character, and respond creatively to site-specific challenges. Our work is about refinement, not reinvention—finding clarity through context, and crafting lasting architecture that honors both past and future.
